Skiing or snowboarding for the first time can feel daunting, but with a good lesson and the right equipment you enjoy it from day one. This guide explains how to prepare everything so that all you have to worry about is having a good time.
Skiing or snowboarding?
There is no single answer: it depends on what you fancy. With skiing your feet are independent and the position feels more natural at first; with snowboarding the whole body works on a single board and it usually takes a bit more patience in the first days. At the Sierra Nevada school there are lessons in both disciplines for children and adults, so you can choose the one that appeals to you most.

Your first day, step by step
- Book in advance Choose the discipline, level and time of the lesson, and also book the equipment and your pass.
- Arrive with time to spare Check the road conditions and where to park so you are not in a rush.
- Pick up your equipment Try on boots, helmet and goggles calmly and ask for help if anything pinches or feels uncomfortable.
- Take your lesson Follow your instructor’s directions: the first turns and how to stop are what matter most.
- Rest and repeat Take breaks to hydrate and eat something. If you can, a second day helps consolidate what you have learned.
